The Code of Conduct of Lynnwood Ridge Primary School

PREAMBLE TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT OF LYNNWOOD RIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

We confirm the following;

 “The Mission of Lynnwood Ridge Primary School is to provide CHRISTIAN ORIENTATED, NON RACIAL ENGLISH MEDIUM PRIMARY EDUCATION to children living primarily in the natural feeder area of the school and to achieve the HIGHEST STANDARDS AND NORMS in the pursuance of EXCELLENCE.”

 Clause 27 of the constitution of our school provides that the maintenance of discipline at our school is the responsibility of the Governing Body, and is exercised by the Principal in terms of the South African Schools Act, 84 of 1996 (as amended from time to time), in terms of any Regulations promulgated in accordance with the Act, and in terms of this Code of Conduct.

 This, our Code of Conduct, serves as a point of departure for the enforcement and extension of our school’s disciplinary character and for guiding ourselves to self-discipline.

 We aim, through the implementation of this Code of Conduct, to establish a disciplined and purposeful school environment, dedicated to improving and maintaining the quality of education. School discipline is the responsibility of the Principal, all of the Educators and the Governing Body. It is essential that the Code of Conduct is accepted and positively supported by the Parents of our pupils and that the same support is given to any disciplinary procedures that may arise from the implementation of the Code of Conduct.

 The South African Schools Act No. 84 of 1996 stipulates that a disciplined and purposeful school environment should be created which is devoted to the progress, furtherance and maintenance of the standard of the learning process. It is further stated that; (1) no learner may be refused admission because his/her parents do not accept the Mission of the school [Section 5 (3) (b)] BUT, (2) all learners have to abide by the Code of Conduct formulated by the school in which they are enrolled [Section 8 (4)]. No stipulation of the Schools Act exempts a learner from this obligation.

 We believe that;

1.             Good school discipline is a characteristic of effective schools and fosters learning.

2.             Learners will learn best in an orderly environment where good discipline is an integral part of good school management.

3.             Parental support for constructive discipline at the school is essential.

Therefore, we strive, through this Code of Conduct to;

1.             Create an orderly and purposeful school environment in which meaningful and qualitative education can take place; where self-discipline, responsibility and accountability are the norm,

2.             To regulate learner conduct,

3.             To emphasize positive discipline,

4.             To discipline the unruly learner, to call him/her to responsibility and accountability,

5.             To keep a record of the behaviour of each learner, both positive and negative,

6.             To acknowledge the learners right to discipline,

7.             To acknowledge the learners right to be heard,

8.             To identify those learners with serious deviations in their behaviour patterns; to discipline such learners in order that their behaviour patterns may improve,

9.             To isolate (suspend) learners whose behaviour patterns do not improve in order to minimize their negative influence on other learners.

10.         To protect learners from the ill discipline of others; to ensure a proper and nurturing learning environment for all.

 Discipline is linked to the use of corrective measures. Learners must know what is expected of them and what actions will be taken should they behave in an unacceptable manner.

 We at Lynnwood Ridge Primary School use a system of Assertive Discipline for general disciplinary purposes. The aim of this system is to teach learners how to behave responsibly and how to make correct choices when it comes to their behaviour.

 For serious misconduct, we subscribe to the procedure outlined in the GDE Policy Register 2002 - service 1 ‘Misconduct of Learners at Public Schools and disciplinary proceedings’, which is itself subject to any provisions of the South African Schools Act or any Regulations promulgated in accordance therewith dealing with the subject, including Regulations dealing with disciplinary proceedings which might lead to suspension or expulsion. (See attached document - Serious Misconduct Rules and Procedures.)
