OUR SCHOOL

Welcome to Lynnwood Ridge!

A school is a mini world. It has its own culture and people who live and work in this environment, making it what it is. The most distinguishing feature of our little world is that it is a very happy place. The staffroom is always abuzz with chatter; learners are excited to come to school each day to socialize with their friends and to learn; staff and learners can often be seen showing caring and kindness to one another and parents become involved in a variety of ways. Family is what it is all about; one big happy family all learning and working together for common goals. The big world we live in is a pressurized place. May our children continue to be nurtured in a loving and caring environment, conducive to developing not only knowledge and skills, but also values and attitudes which make life worth living and make each person someone who is special to the world in which we live!

May our school continue this happy tradition and continue to uphold our motto to be "Strong and True"!

Mr N.B.Van Graan - Headmaster.

STRONG AND TRUE!

SCHOOL SONG

On rocky ridge and weed clad slope

Where tall pines cast their shade

A school was built named Lynnwood Ridge

On firm foundations laid

On firm foundation laid.

Within these halls of learning

Each child is taught to know

To value friendship, courtesy

As on through life we go.

God give us understanding

Is the simple prayer we pray

May our children be strong and straight and true

In work as well as play.

Strong and true, strong and true

Eternal and yet ever new

Throughout the future years.

Ann Mes (1977)

Our  motto is 'Strong and True' which is displayed below the school crest. The origin of the pine cone in the school crest and the motto is described in

the School Song.

Our Place on this Planet

LRPS is a co-educational, primary school, situated in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria. The school opened its doors for the first time on 2 September 1975.

We have a Staff compliment of over 60 made up of Academic Staff, a Sports Coordinator, a Child Psychologist, Office Staff and Support Staff. Most of the Staff are employed by the Gauteng Department of Education whilst the rest are employed by the Governing Body.

Our current enrolment from grade one to grade seven is about 1200 pupils. We have five classes per grade, an aid class and satellite classes where children who may be experiencing learning difficulties may have their specific learning needs catered for by remedial teachers.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Restrictions are in place regarding the age of a child to be enrolled into grade i.

Grade R pupils may be enrolled through the school office.

Parents are encouraged to apply for the admission of their children before the end of the preceding year and specifically between July and the end of September of that year.

PLEASE NOTE:

The feeder zone for 2010-11 is the school nearest to the parents' home address or, work address for parents who live in the domicile of the employer.

A learner who lives outside the feeder zone is not precluded from seeking admission at whichever school he or she chooses but will be placed on waiting list B and will only be informed of his/her placement at the end of October 2009.

Please contact the school office for more information regarding enrolment.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

We have always encouraged our parents to become involved in our school. There is always a need for parents with special skills such as building, electrical, plumbing, architectural, computers - the list is endless! Perhaps you could offer just plain hard work and lots of commitment? Whatever your skills and abilities, we need you.

Please contact Mrs. De Chermont at the front office if you can help.

We offer the following cultural activities at our school; Computer Club, mathematics tuition using computers, Junior and Senior Choir, Guitar Club, Steel Band, Sepedi class, Cami maths and Technology Club.

Activities offered for a fee by outside tutors.

Ballet, Dance, Art, Swimming, Miki Maths, Piano and  Karate

We do this because we care!

We encourage our children to take part in extra curricular activities from the year of inception. There is something for everyone; from soccer to singing we try to offer activities suitable for all interests and skills.

We offer the following cultural activities;  Steelband, Choir both Junior and Senior, Chess, Sepedi class, Guitar Club, and Computers. We also offer private Art, Ballet and Dance tuition.

Our sports curriculum is split into summer and winter activities. We offer Swimming, Athletics, Cricket, Soccer, Tennis and Netball.

As the children get older so their sporting activities get more competitive. We try our very best to teach our children that winning within the parameters of good sportsmanship is the way to go. Gamesmanship and destructive competitiveness is actively discouraged.

In the Foundation Phase, we have extended the school day in order to include a variety of  extra curricular activities. We do this so that all the Foundation Phase children can benefit from extra curricular participation.  Extra curricular activities include spatial development, ball skills, swimming, organised games, crossing the midline activities and essential skills such as balancing, hand eye co-ordination and the inculcation of good sporting attitudes.

Dedicated junior team activities such as cricket and soccer happen on Saturdays and are organised by enthusiastic fathers and mothers. In all our extra curricular sporting activities in the Foundation Phase the emphasis is on participation and good sportsmanship.

Extra curricular activities in the Intermediate and Senior Phase are more diverse than the Foundation Phase. The progression in the higher classes is toward disciplined  specialisation and skills development; a natural progression from the junior sports fields. We employ skilled and experienced coaching staff to teach our children how to play their games. Every parent wishes to be assured that while their child is at school, he/she will be well cared for.

We offer a learning environment in which the whole child is given the opportunity to develop to his/her full potential. We encourage every child to take part in the broad curriculum offered at our school, both academic and extra curricular. We recognise leadership ability in every child in our school and give equal opportunity to each to develop their leadership skills from inception year. Above all, our children are encouraged to achieve excellence in all that they do; to be accountable for all that they do; to appreciate and accept the rich diversity of our nation; to strive to make our school a happy and safe place.
