SOCIAL SCIENCE GRADE V

This year the subject Social
Science kicked off on a high note with the introduction of
our first theme: The Old & New 7 Wonders of the World. It
is here that the children discovered that the Pyramid of
Giza is the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World.
This led to our second
theme: Egypt. The mystery surrounding ancient Egypt had
everyone talking and the corridors were buzzing with
questions, such as: Do you know who Tutankhamen was? And:
Do you know there is a curse on all who dare enter the
pyramids?
The second term had another
interesting theme: China. It is in China that one of the
New 7 Wonders is found The Great Wall of China. It is
said that this wall is the only structure visible to the
naked eye, from the moon!
A whole new world was opened
to the learners as they started noticing well-known symbols
from ancient civilizations, everywhere they turned. For
example, The Magnum advertisement with Chichen Itza (one of
the New 7 Wonders) as well as the Mummy movie and cartoons
featuring the Terracotta Soldiers. All this suddenly made
sense to them. This was further reinforced by television
adverts featuring the Colosseum in Rome and the latest
Survivor programme held in China.
Since everyone had something
to say about these subjects, it was decided to present a
Show-and-Tell event. Every learner had to either build or
bring a model of the symbol supporting his or her topic of
discussion.
The quality of the models
built and the content of the topics discussed, was simply
outstanding! From giant Great Walls of China to Canopic
jars for mummification. There was even a beautiful (close
to perfect) headdress of King Tut. Also, a number of
pyramids with chambers that could open and
close, filled with jewels and
even a mummy or two.
Make no mistake, History is
alive and well and LIVING at LRPS. Our children simply
cannot get enough thereof!
Some of the best models are
presently being exhibited in the media centre and will be on
display until the end of the first week of Term 3.
Feel free to come and have a
look BUT
beware the curse of the Mummy! |
