LETTER FOR SNACKS AND SNACK TIME
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Foundation Phase has a short 10 minute snack break
every day. During this time the children are allowed to go
to the toilet, drink water and eat a small snack provided by
you as parents.
The snack should not be bread and definitely not a sugary
treat, but something healthy to give your child energy and
at the same time hopefully improve concentration. The
teachers have reported back very positively regarding the
commitment of parents to providing healthy snacks as well as
saying that there is a definite improvement in concentration
after snack time.
Any of the following snacks may be packed:
Fruit: Fresh fruit or dried fruit but no fruit sticks e.g.
a banana, grapes, pieces of apple, etc.
Vegetables: a peeled carrot, tomatoes, pieces of cucumber,
etc.
Other snacks: nuts, seeds, raisins, yoghurt, etc.
Any protein: a boiled egg, fish fingers, viennas, cheese
cubes, biltong, etc.
Please note: no savoury biscuits, bread, pizza slices or
pies will be allowed during snack time but will be kept for
break time. The children will not be allowed to go to the
tuckshop during the snack time or during school time.
The reasons for implementing the snack time are as follows:
· Many of the children do not eat sufficient
breakfast and are starving by break time, it is a very long
morning for busy children.
· If your child is hungry or thirsty concentration
levels become poor as blood sugar levels drop. Water is
recognised as a very important aid in assisting the mental
well being of your child. Please send a plastic cup to
school for your child to drink water.
· Please assist us in teaching healthy eating habits
by:
v Making sure that your child eats something substantial
for breakfast as this is the most important meal of the day.
v Pack a healthy snack as suggested above.
v Pack a healthy lunch for break time (no sweets, chips,
fizzy coldrinks, etc are allowed in the Foundation Phase.
The teachers will check the lunch boxes and any unhealthy
snacks will be confiscated and returned to your child at the
end of the day.
Thank you for your assistance and co-operation thus far in
this very important matter.
Kind regards,
